Palpebrae (Eyelids)

Conjunctiva (Superficial epithelium)

Lacrimal Apparatus

Curved row or thick short hairs along the superior orbital ridge. They prevent sweat from dripping into the eye.

Hairs on the margins of the eyelids that prevent large foreign objects from contacting the eyes.

Moveable anterior protective covering for the eye.

The opening between the two eyelids.

(AKA canthus) where the eyelids unite at their medial and lateral borders.

Small, reddish structure at the medial commissure (canthus) that contains modified sweat glands.

Located within both eyelids containing sebaceous glands to prevent tear overflow and the eyelids from sticking together.

Stratified squamous epithelium that lines the anterior surface of the eye and the inner surface of the eyelid. It contains goblet cells to lubricate and moisten the eye.

Are connected at corners of the eye.

AKA Sty; painful, localized swelling associated with infection of tarsal gland.

Opens eyelid.

Closes eyelid.

Extraocular.

• Inner surfaces of eye lids called Palpebral Conjunctiva

• Anterior surfaces of eye called Ocular Conjunctiva

Corneal epithelium

-Transparent part of outer fibrous layer of eye; continuous with ocular conjunctiva.

• Located in lateral depression in front bone

• Produces tears

Contains modified sweat glands.

2 small “holes” in the caruncle that drain the lacrimal lake.

Drains lacrimal fluid into lacrimal sac which is nested into lacrimal sulcus.

Receives tears from the lacrimal sac and drains the fluid into the nasal cavity.
