  • Mouth

• Bicarbonate and pancreatic α-amylase

  • Pancreas

  • Neutralize the acidic pH from the stomach

  • Digest the alpha dextrins to maltose, maltotriose, isomaltose and limit dextrins

GLUCOAMYLASE

• Found in the intestinal brush border

• Breaks limit dextrin down to isomaltose 

SUCRASE-ISOMALTASE

• Majority in the jejunum

• Has 2 catalytic sites 

o Sucrase-maltase 

o Isomaltase-maltase

TREHALASE

• One catalytic site hydrolizes α-1,1 glycosidic bonds in trehalose

• Consumption of trehalose can cause discomfort in enzyme deficient patients

BETA-GLYCOSIDASE COMPLEX

• Has 2 catalytic sites 

o Lactase – hydrolyzes β-bonds connecting glucose and galactose in lactose

o Other site – hydrolyzes β-bonds between galactose or glucose and ceramide in glycolipids

• Lactose intolerance o Pain, nausea and flatulence after 

consumption of dairy products
