Describe the actions of NaCl.
0.9% sodium chloride solution (i.e., isotonic) closely approximates the composition of the extracellular fluid of the body.
Required for the regulation of acid-base balance equilibrium.
Sodium, the principal extracellular fluid cation, controls water distribution, fluid balance, and the osmotic pressure of body fluids.
Chloride, the major extracellular anion, reflects changes in the acid-base balance of the body [ref] and has a buffering action when oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange occurs in RBCs.
Can induce diuresis depending on the volume administered and the clinical condition of the patient.
