Functions
Challenge of passive sensors in comparision with active sonar or radar:
Determine the range / distance of an object / target. The direction is easy to determin with the variety of different sonars on board of the submarine
IDRS: “Intercept Detection and Ranging”, 10 - 100 KHz
“Intercept”: Reception of other sonar signals, especially time-critical transmissions, e.g. noise of an oncoming / attacking torpedo, early warning or transient noises like opening of torpedo flap or hostile submarine before launching the torpedo, always short distance, therefore working at higher frequencies
CHA: simple, mature solution, direction determined by 360 degree arrangement of hydrophone staves
PRS: Passive Ranging Arrays, Distance to contact determined by radius of oncoming / incident acoustic waves
Flank Array, Extended Flank Array: Low frequency, due to arrangement on port and starboard side and length, direction of object wrt own submarine can be determined
Mine avoidance: active, very high frequency, short distance
Broadband transducer array: active sonar transmitter, especially for export U214 type
ONA: own noise analysis: spectral analysis of noise emissions from own boat (pumps etc.), supplemented by accelerometers fixed directly to the pressure hull (“body noise”, “Körperschall”)
TAS in conjunction with FAS / EFAS nad / or CHA can give very exact information on distance and direction of an object
