Life Cycle

Egg

  1. transparent, white, cylindrical,very tiny eggs

  2. On flour or flour powder.

  3. Because the eggs are sticky, flour easily sticks to the eggs and they are not easily identified.

  4. 5-12 days

Larvae

  1. Freshly erupted lava is very small, about 1 mm long.

  2. first light yellow and then reddish gray in color

  3. the head, legs and last abdominal segment are dark yellow-red in color.

  4. In the larval stage, this pest feeds on large quantities of food grains and grows. Larva moults 6-7 times and after moulting each time the body grows and changes. These stages are called instar larvae. (become big upto 6mm)

  5. 27-90 days

Adult

  1. full-grown beetles are small gray in color

  2. 3.5mm in length and 1.2 mm in weidth

  3. antennae are long and rounded at the apex.

  4. Full-grown adult breed from April to October. These full-growns are seen only in winter.

  5. Mating takes place within 2 days after emergence

Pupa

  1. Pupae are elongated, yellowish and hairy

  2. Becomes immobile in pupa stage and stops feeding.

  3. In this condition pupa produces a thread of their secreted saliva and coats the mature spore with it. Gradually these mature larvae transform into pupae.

  4. The pupal stage lasts 6-9 days. Then pupae transformed into adult

Distribution

Damage

cause particular damage to Arhar trees

besides green peas, tobacco, millet, cotton, corn etc.

  • Larvae is the harmful stage.

  • They first eat the leaves, flowers,

  • then penetrate the pods and damage the seeds.

Control

  • Clean farming.

  • Regular monitoring.

  • Application of pyrethrin aerosol

  • Entomopathogenic fungus can also be used.
