1.) CAx definitions:
o CAD: Computer aided design
o CAE: Computer aided engineering
o CAM: Computer aided manufacturing
o CASE: Computer aided software engineering
o CAT: Computer aided testing
2.) Development step, process and workflow
Development step
One layout, design, computation or testing step in a development process.
Development process
A sequence of certain development steps in order to reach the development goal.
Development workflow
A controlled sequence of certain computer-aided development steps under application of certain development tools („CAx workflow“).
3.) Difference between process and workflow
The process describes, what has to be done,
the workflow defines, how this must be done.
4.) What is a Algorithm, Method, CAx data backbone
Algorithm
Finite sequence of unique computation steps for solving a numerical problem.
Method
Well-defined sequences of rules / algorithms which allow to regularly reach one or more objects of a development.
CAx data backbone
A common channel for forwarding all the relevant CAx data within the development process (correlating with PDM - Product Data Management).
5.) Mock-Ups?
Mock-up
Physical model (mock-up) or prototype (functional model) inactual size used in the vehicle development (“PMU”). Expensivemanufacture.
Digital mock-up
Realistic simulation of complex geometrical vehicle-structures or vehicles for the purpose of visualisation, free space analyses, function optimisation as well as for the evaluation and decision making (“DMU”).
Virtual mock-up
DMU is increasingly extended from the pure geometrical level to higher physical and logical functions, with the objective of a virtual mock-up (“VMU”).
6.) Concepts of virtual product development
7.) Product life cycle
8.) Generation of costs during the product life cycle
High variances, degrees of freedom, and complexity in early phases.
9.) Life cycle of a vehicle
The development has great importance within the product building phase.
o Approx. 70% of the product costs are settled there.
o Short innovation cycles decide on competition advantages.
The development activities are supported by CAx methods, which have to consider aspects of the entire life cycle of a vehicle.
Examples:
o Development: DMU, CAD/CAM, CAE Fulfilment of the product requirements, see the overview above.
o Production planning: DMU, CAD/CAM
o Production/manufacturing: CAM
o After sales/service: DMU: Reachability, repair mounting
o Recycling: DMU: Dismounting, material seperation
