spinal nerve is formed from an anterior (efferent fibers) + posterior (afferent) spinal root
—> the 2 roots fuse and leave the vertebral canal through the intervertebral foramen
—> outside the vertebral canal the spinal nerve divides into posterior branch + anterior branch + communicating branch
