Why is “Streetcar named desire” a tragedy? And why is the tragic heroine ‘Blanche’?
Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire is a modern tragedy because it follows the classical tragic structure with a contemporary twist. The play’s protagonist, Blanche DuBois, is a tragic heroine whose flaw (hamartia), her dependence on illusion and denial of reality, leads to her downfall. Her conflict with Stanley represents a larger clash between illusion and brutal truth. The play ends in catastrophe with Blanche’s mental collapse and removal to an asylum. This evokes pity and fear in the audience, fulfilling the tragic function of catharsis. Thus, the play reflects key elements of tragedy in a modern setting.
