What is the difference between gram positive and gram negative bacteria?
The difference lies in the components of the cell wall.
Gram positive bacteria consist of:
a plasma membrane (= normal belayer)
a periplasmic space
thick peptidoglycan-layer on top
Gram negative bacteria have very complex cell walls with:
a plasma membrane
a small periplasmic space
thin peptidoglycan-layer
another periplasmic space
finally an outer lipid membrane
Definition of prokaryotes:
A Prokaryote is a single-cell organism whose cell lacks a nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles.
They are divided into two distinct groups the bacteria and the archaea, which are known for their simple cell structure but incredible diversity and ability to thrive in various environments.
Size of bacteria, virus, protein
Bacteria: 1-2 μm diameter and 5-10 μm length
Virus: diameter between 20-300 nm
Protein: 3-6 nm Cell
