What is Erasmus+?
Erasmus+ is a European exchange programme that supports study and internship stays abroad through financial funding, academic recognition, and administrative support.
Advantages of Erasmus+
Erasmus+ offers several advantages. Students are exempt from tuition fees at the host university and receive a monthly financial grant, which depends on the destination country. Academic credits can usually be recognized after agreement with the faculty. Students also receive academic and administrative support from both LMU and the host university.
(In addition, students can participate in intercultural programmes offered by the International Office and have access to Online Language Support for language preparation.)
Erasmus+ Mobility Formats
Erasmus+ offers different mobility formats:
Study abroad at a partner university
Internships abroad
Blended Intensive Programmes (BIPs), which combine a short physical stay abroad with a virtual learning phase
Doctoral mobility
Who can participate?
To participate in Erasmus+, students must:
be enrolled at LMU
have successfully completed at least the first year of their Bachelor’s degree
have sufficient language skills in the language of instruction at the time of application
Application Procedure & Responsibilities
The application process usually has two main steps.
First, students apply through their faculty’s Erasmus coordinator, who is responsible for academic planning and selection. The application deadline is usually January 15th, and there is typically only one application round per year.
After nomination, students complete the administrative process through the LMU International Office, including the Learning Agreement and the Grant Agreement.
General Application Information
Erasmus places are usually subject-specific, meaning students mainly take courses from their own faculty. Students who study more than one subject can apply through multiple programme coordinators. Applicants can usually choose up to four preferred partner universities.
The mobility period starts either in the following winter or summer semester. Applications outside one’s field of study are generally not permitted.
Applications for partner universities in the UK and Switzerland (SEMP) are also submitted via the Erasmus application form.
Required Documents
Required documents are listed on the faculty website and usually include:
a motivation letter
a CV
a transcript of records
an online application form
a cover sheet
proof of language proficiency (usually English B2, other languages B1)
MOVE-UP / LATE APPLICATION PROCEDURE (Nachrückverfahren)
If Erasmus places remain unfilled, a move-up procedure is possible.
The application deadlines are:
March 31st for the winter semester
September 15th for the summer semester
Applicants must submit the regular documents and an additional confirmation of academic supervision from a lecturer.
The documents are submitted to the International Office.
What is a Learning Agreement?
A Learning Agreement is a document that defines which courses a student plans to take abroad and ensures that these courses can be recognized after the mobility period.
Who is responsible for what in the application process?
The faculty Erasmus coordinator is responsible for academic matters and selection, while the International Office handles administrative processes such as contracts and funding.
What would you do if a student asks for very specific details you’re unsure about?
I would check the relevant faculty or International Office guidelines or refer the student to the appropriate contact person to ensure correct information.
