Statistics
The science of conducting studies to collect, organize, summarize, analyze, and draw conclusions from data.
Variable
A characteristic or attribute that can assume different values and describe a situation.
Data
The raw material that is collected by making observations, taking measurements, counting, or asking questions. The measurements or observations that the variable can become.
Data Set
A collection of data values.
Descriptive Statistics
The collection, organization, summarization, and presentation of data. Anything done to data that DOES NOT infer or generalize anything beyond the data itself.
Inferential Statistics
Generalizing data from samples to population, performing estimations and hypothesis tests, determining relationships among variables, and making predictions. Going beyond available information and data to make generalizations or predictions.
Population
All subjects that are being studied.
Sample
A group of subjects selected from a population.
Qualitative Variables
A variable that can be placed into distinct categories, according to some characteristics or attribute. Also called categorical data
Quantitative Variables
A variable that is numerical in nature and that can be ordered or ranked. Also called numerical data.
Discrete Variables
A variable that assumes values that can be counted.
Continuous Variables
A variable that can assume all values between any two specific values. A variable obtained by measuring.
Nominal Level of Measurement
Classifies data into mutually exclusive categories in which no order or ranking can be imposed on the data.
Ordinal Level of Measurement
Classifies data into categories that can be ranked; however, precise differences between that ranks do not exist.
Interval Level of Measurement
Ranks data and precise differences between units of measure do exist; however, there is no meaningful zero
Ratio Level of Measurement
Possesses all the characteristics of interval measurement, and a true zero does exist. True ratios exist when the same variable is measured on two different members of the population.
