Identify key sustainability issues of your company (ISO 26000 or similar standards can be used to develop a preliminary list of issues)
Align list with corporate strategy and relevant stakeholders
Assess the relevance of sustainability issues to the company (x-axis) and the stakeholders (y-axis)
Record the development process for transparency and traceability
The Materaility Matrix
Categorization of sustainability issues into 4 categories facilitated by a threshold for the importance to stakeholder and company:
Societal issues (high relevance to stakeholders, low relevance to the company) e.g. animal welfare for food companies
Potential issues (low relevance to stakeholder and company) e.g. direct impact on biodiversity for a car manufacturer
Corporate issues (low relevance to stakeholders, high relevane to the company) e.g. employee development for all companies
Material issues (high relevance to stakeholders and company) e.g. CO2 emissions for a car manufacturer
Keep in mind: The Materiality Matrix may lead to a different outcome for companies in the same industry. Thus, being transparent in the development of the matrix is crucial.
