What does it mean to “keep it real” when the language you use is not your own?
Hip-hop, as both a musical genre and cultural movement, is deeply intertwined with African American Vernacular English, or AAVE.
Linguists such as Lippi-Green (2012) and Wolfram & Schilling (2016) have repeatedly demonstrated that AAVE is a rule-governed dialect, not “broken English.” However, it carries a double status: it is stigmatized in mainstream society while being celebrated as an essential marker of credibility in hip-hop culture.

Other markers, such as copula deletion (she Ø real instead of she is real) and multiple negation (ain’t nobody got time for that), are often perceived as "incorrect" in mainstream English but function systematically within AAVE’s grammatical rules.

Given its massive popularity and the authentic linguistic and cultural insights it offers, Rap/Hip-Hop is an essential genre for EFL teaching. It enriches language acquisition, promotes intercultural understanding, and fosters critical thinking in a way that resonates with students’ interests and global realities.
