Chapter 90 - Transformational Leadership

• Process - TL is a process that changes and transforms individuals

• Influence - TL involves an exceptional form of influence that moves followers to accomplish more than what is usually expected

• Core elements - TL is concerned with emotions, values, ethics, standards, and long-term goals (e-l-v-e-s)

• Encompassing approach – TL describes a wide range of leadership influence where followers and leaders are bound together in the transformation process

Transactional: it is about reciprocity, problem: people only comply to what you are asking (would not go extra mile); people get numb to what they receive

Engage in this and you can transform yourself & others

TL motivates followers beyond the expected by:

• raising consciousness about the value and importance of specific and idealized goals

• transcending self-interest for the good of the team or organization

• addressing higher-level needs

• Transformational Leadership: music theory - mix of major and minor cords (only major cords = people get used to it)

• great speeches: always structured in the same way

  • present - past - present - future

  • present sucks, but in the past happy, stuck in present, don’t worry vote for me great past (minor/major)

  • transformative communication: “Make America Great Again”, “Build Back Better”
