What is the ethics of care?
The ethics of care focuses on protecting people with whom we have important relationships, especially those who depend on us.
It values empathy, responsibility and personal connection.
How can care and justice conflict?
Caring for someone close to us may lead us to treat others unfairly.
Example:
A manager may want to hire a friend, but another applicant is more qualified.
-> The manager must consider both loyalty to the friend and fairness toward all candidates.
How does the ethics of care differ from justice?
Justice usually asks us to treat people impartially.
Care recognizes that we may have special responsibilities toward particular people.
Example: Parents have stronger duties toward their own children than toward complete strangers.
Are all relationships morally valuable according to the ethics of care?
No. Relationships are not valuable when they involve:
domination/ violence /exploitation;
hatred/ injustice/ disrespect.
Care should protect healthy relationships, not harmful ones.
