Primitives: gestures that are physically possible & able to recognize -> limited amount -> can only find a certain amount of primitives
different input modalities -> different strengths than for example mouse
modality has special features -> can be used
avoid generic solutions -> not suitable for experts
-> change mechanics; not reinvent primitives
